Truer Words Were Never Spoken!

Forging Good Luck

Even strong metal can grow fatigued:
Overwrought Iron
"Strike while the irony's hot."
I deserve a  medal for this one . . . although it's been said many times, many ways.

UPDATE: TheBigHenry predates me on this twisted proverb by almost a decade! The man deserves a medal.

HJH,

I coined the expression, "Strike while the irony's hot!". It was the title of my second blog post, dated Sunday, April 29, 2007. Please feel free to quote me with attribution.

Thanx, HJH.

When I came up with that title, I googled it before I published my post. Google returned no search results for that expression (at that time). So I was fairly confident it had not been published before. If it had been used before (according to Google), I would have published my title in quotes, despite my having come up with the pun independently.

You're Welcome, TBH!

I didn't go to the trouble of Googling because I assumed I wasn't really the first - but what were the odds the original would turn out to be from someone I know - you!

Those odds, HJH, are incalculable for mere mortals like me.

As you probably know by now, I enjoy punning. This one is my second personal favorite. Which one is my favorite, you ask? Glad you asked ...

When I was in grad school, living in the grad dormitory (John Jay Hall, Columbia), I befriended a fellow grad living a few doors down from me on the 14th floor. He was an English lit major who was writing his first novel (between those times when he was attending to his dissertation). He told me a few things about his novel, including something about inappropriate sexual activity involving a minor. When he told me that, I responded, "Oh, you mean impaling the morals of a minor."

That one remains my all time personal favorite pun. He asked my permission to use it in his novel, which I gave him. But I lost touch with him, and I have no idea if he ever finished his novel.

Would you believe I'd never heard the original? Yes, the expression "impairing the morals of a minor" was not in my repertoire! (Nor was the deed.) Nice pun, by the way. I now see why you liked my BBB . . .

My wife, Trish, majored in Russian lit at the U. of Chicago and is now getting a Ph.D. in cognitive science and linguistics. If I manage to get a smile out of her with one of my puns, it kind of makes my day.

My entire family groans when I pun, but I'm slowly turning them into reflections of me. Just the other day my wife was trying to cut beef into thin slices for shabu-shubu, but was tearing a lot of it. My son En-Uk observed this and called her a "tearerist."

Good one. A family that puns together has fun together ... But one mustn't overdo it, either. Otherwise, the grins inevitably turn to groans.
